Canine Studies Classes at Solihull College

I teach Canine Studies at Solihull College. This course is for dog enthusiasts who want to learn more about our canine companions – for personal interest or for work. It provides opportunities for you and your dog to learn together in and out of the classroom. The course supports the Kennel Club Accreditation Scheme for Instructors in Dog Training and Canine Behaviour.

There are three units - you can complete one, two or all three units. Each unit runs for 10 weeks

Unit 1: Canine Behaviour (September - December 2007)

  • Origins and history of the dog and the effects of human selection
    Roles of dogs in society
    Drives and breed differences
    Canine social structure and communication
    Understanding mental health and stress
    developmental stages of the dog

Unit 2: Canine Care and Welfare (January - March 2008)

  • Anatomy and physiology
    Health and illness
    Preventative health care
    First aid Grooming
    Nutrition

Unit 3 Teaching Dogs (April - June 2008)

  • How dogs learn
    Planning reward-based training sessions
    Evaluating teaching and learning
    Practical training sessions
